After I did the banner graphic for his morphine.com page, Christian Void asked me to do one for the Killing Floor page, too. He said he really didn't have anything in particular in mind, as he was redesigning the pages around their current banner graphic. He suggested that I totally redesign it, based on their album cover and logo.
I scanned the logo and the three images from the cover that were most prominent: the circular symbol, the strange man (in the lower right corner), and the hands and chains (background).
After duplicating the hands and chains to cover the entire background, I used the lasso tool to select a jagged portion of the upper left corner, adjusted the color to a washed-out "WWII footage" shade (that's what it reminded me of, anyway)with the hue/saturation and brightness/contrast controls, then rendered difference clouds about six times. I repeated the process on the lower right corner, but instead of the washed-out tone, I opted for a very dark one. I placed all the other images over this basic image.
I used the lasso tool to select the little man from his black background and placed him in the corner of the banner.
The "Killing Floor" logo from the CD cover is white lettering on a black background, so this part was easy too: I used the magic wand to select the entire black background, then inverted the selection so only the white letters were selected. I cut and pasted them onto the banner graphic, then selected each letter separately and applied the cut-out filter.
For the next series of tweaks, I used a saved copy of the above image with a different file name, so the original was untouched. I used the magic wand to select the entire black background of the circular symbol, then inverted so that only the white portions were selected. I placed this in the upper left corner of the banner image, but since half of the ball in the middle of the symbol was black, it was not selected. I went back and used the elliptical selection tool to select only the area covered by the ball, then copied and pasted it into the middle of the symbol. I then used the elliptical selection tool to select the whole area covered by the symbol. After inverting to select the rest of the banner graphic (leaving the symbol unselected), I applied the RetroScan filter by Deep Devices, which applies noise to an image, making it look like a TV screen receiving a breaking signal. I then inverted the selection again, applying the drop shadow filter to the circular symbol.
I then used the lasso tool to select the upper left corner, along the line where I had selected it before (when I applied difference clouds and such), copied it, and pasted it onto the original banner image.
....And the deed is done.
(...Though it was a bit too flashy for Christian's needs, so I ended up going back to the basics and making a really simple banner with the chains and hands in the background and just plain ol' "Killing Floor" up front. Go figure.)
